From Your Pastor

As I write this article, the General Conference of our United Methodist Church is planning to gather at Fort Worth, Texas. General Conference meets once every four years. It is made up of an equal number of lay and clergy delegates (up to 1000) elected by the Annual Conferences from within the United States and Central Conferences outside of the U.S.A.

General Conference is the only body with authority to speak officially for The United Methodist Church. The ‘2004 Book of Discipline’ states: “The General Conference has full legislative power over all matters distinctively connectional”; meaning that it has the power to make and change laws governing our denomination, revise The Book of Discipline, establish program emphases for the church throughout the quadrennium, and authorize the four-year budget for our denomination’s general work.

Our Pacific Northwest Annual Conference, comprising the state of Washington and Northern Idaho, is represented by six delegates (three clergy and three laity) who were elected at our Annual Conference session last June, to represent us in Fort Worth. The number of delegates an Annual Conference is entitled is computed on the number of clergy members of the Annual Conference, and the number of members in its local churches. We are a small Annual Conference within the Western Jurisdiction of our denomination, in comparison to other Annual Conferences within the Northeastern, Southeastern, or South Central Jurisdictions which might have as many as thirty delegates.

You may read or hear news concerning decisions by the gathering at Fort Worth. Please remember that until we officially hear it from our Bishop’s office, nothing is official. Do pray for the delegates at General Conference, that God will guide them in all the decisions they make on our behalf.

Mission Statement

"The United Methodist Church of Kent is a community of Christians who acknowledge God as Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer and who share the United Methodist Discipline and connection. The purpose of the United Methodist Church of Kent is to be a community that seeks to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ effectively, and to reach out to our neighbors through our attitudes, words and actions in loving service.   As followers of Christ we seek to learn, teach and grow in faith; and to express our faith practically in the ministry of our church, our daily life and our work.   We seek to be supportive of one another, in the spirit of Christ, in joy and sorrow and in crisis and in common life.   We seek to cherish our diversity of gifts and backgrounds as individuals and unite in Christ Jesus through our worship, study, and fellowship and service.   We intend to be an inclusive fellowship, without regard to race, class, gender, status or condition."
